In some cases, it’s as almost as if the writers are trying to hard to create a new experience, ultimately resorting to not just breaking down the fourth wall but downright pulverizing it. To be honest, however, these are more supplementary rather than a reinvention of Danganronpa’s wheel. To help shake things up, the game tries to add some new elements, such as Monokuma’s “kids” the Monokubs. In fact, one of the downsides of V3 is the been-there, done-that vibe you get if you’ve already played the previous games.
THOUGHTS ON DANGANRONPA KILLING HARMONY V3 TRIAL
Occasionally, you’ll have to engage in mini game-style activities to progress the trial until you get back on course and lead the trial to its proper conclusion.įor those who have played the previous games before, this is actually par for the course. Eventually, you’ll enter the Class Trial phase where you’re then tasked to find inconsistencies in other people’s testimony and use the Truth Bullets you’ve gained in the course of your investigation to shoot down faulty statements. Once a murder occurs, you enter the Deadly Life segment where you investigate the crime scene, interview students and gather information. In that sense, Danganronpa is like a kicked-up visual novel that features a meaty story with some detective gameplay. This only worsens as the killings start to occur and trust becomes a rare commodity.Īs with previous games, the game revolves around investigating the school and your fellow students after each killing. As the impact of imprisonment and the mind games of the shadow mastermind slowly chip at the resolve of the students, however, the group unity starts to fade.Įventually, the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles turns into a psychological petri dish as doubt, insecurity and suspicion start to gnaw at its surviving members. The natural reaction is to not take part in the game and figure out a way to reveal the mastermind instead, which is exactly what happens at first. Naturally, this is a situation that raises all sorts of moral dilemmas.

If the other students figure out who the killer is, however, then the killer is put to death and the killing game continues. Kill someone without being exposed via a group trial and you get to leave scot-free while the other students are exterminated. To set themselves free, the students are forced by a mysterious mastermind, usually acting through robot teddy bear Monokuma, to kill someone. For those unfamiliar with the series, the premise revolves around a group of talented students or “Ultimates,” who find themselves trapped inside a school that’s walled away from the outside world. Danganronpa starts you at as the Ultimate Pianist Kaede Akamatsu, who quickly strikes up a partnership with the Ultimate Detective Shuichi Saihara.

THOUGHTS ON DANGANRONPA KILLING HARMONY V3 SERIES
Once again, the latest iteration of the series serves up a kooky cast of characters. Even if you’re not directly doing the deed, you can feel every ounce of horror that killing entails, especially after you get to know and form bonds with the people involved. In an industry where killing is often trivialized as a gameplay mechanic - heaven knows how many enemy soldiers I’ve shot or blown up in other games without batting an eyelash - Danganronpa treats killing like the horrible, nauseating act that it should be. Sometimes, the topics worth addressing are the ones that make you uncomfortable. One should never approach the topic of killing as something that’s normal.Įven as the sense of newness fades three games into the Danganronpa series' run, that weird feeling I get watching the killing game unfold never goes away.Īt the same time, I can appreciate what the series is trying to do. And, honestly, it should be, no matter how desensitized one might be after watching a bazillion anime shows where high schoolers are treated more like adults. There’s just something about a killing game, one that involves high school students at that, that I find disturbing. I say that as someone who has played the first two games and also watched the anime that the series inspired. On an emotional level, however, it connects with you in a very powerful way.Īdmittedly, I’ve never been completely OK with Danganronpa. It makes you feel uncomfortable deep inside that pit in your stomach, perhaps even give you a gnawing sense of guilt. Playing the Danganronpa series is akin to admiring controversial art.
